Questions about buying a diamond engagement ring.?

So I chose a line of rings, but now comes the process of choosing the diamond to put in it. They have different levels of cut quality, what's wrong with that? It is an "ideal" really cut significantly better than a "very good"? The same goes for color and clarity. Is it really worth paying extra hundreds or even thousands for further qualification or is not even visible to the naked eye? Thank you!
