diamond ring engagement

Does anyone know what the history of diamond engagement ring is?
I'm curious because I've been looking at antique engagement rings and I've noticed that many have colored stones instead of diamonds. Now I'm considering buying a third diamond engagement ring antique style because this is much prettier. I'm kind of curious, however, as to when diamonds became the "traditional" stone.
