What is the best way to get an engagement ring?

I've been shopping around but I am lost. Some say, buying a loose diamond and an adjustment. Some say finding a wholesaler. Some of the websites I've looked at say go here or there. And the stores all say they are the best, but not I have no idea! So what is the opinion of people in the land of yahoo? Thanks for all the great responses so far. I'll be checking them out.
