There are also diamond alternatives, such as cubic zirconia or moissanite. These may seem as good as a diamond but cost much less. You want your ring to look good enough for your girl to want to show it off to your friends. My wife and I decided for moissanite ring because I was able to get a stone very beautiful half-carat to one-tenth of what a diamond might have been.
It's a good idea to do a little research before buying. You want to know what size ring to get the type and style of girl you like. You may have to get a little complicated to get the right answers if you want to keep secret. You do not want to get a big ring for someone with a small hand, it would not look good.
