Can I wash a patchwork quilt in my washing machine?
This is a quilt double wedding ring, sewn by hand and about 30 years old.
It really depends on the quilt. Most quilts made today can be washed without any problem, and I hope that a patchwork of 30 years would be fine. Check a couple of things first, however. 1. Does it look like it's been washed before? One way to tell is the texture of the top. A dirty rug will be relatively smooth. A blanket washing is reduced slightly and may look slightly puckery between points of padding. This is not bad – it's just the way it is. 2. Is there any harm? If there are no tears or Areas of breakdown, you may need to repair before cleaning. 3. Is it really dirty, or does it just need to be sent out? Try throwing over the railing of the porch, or hanging above the line (dry, of course) for a few hours. 4. Are there any spots that need to be pre-treated? Different types of stains can not leave, even with pre-treatment. 5. Most importantly – is the fabric colorfast? Test first by rubbing a damp white cloth on each different fabric. If color transfers are very careful with washing. If you decide to wash, do a combination of hand and machine. Fill the machine with warm water and add a mild detergent like Dreft or Ivory soap flakes. You can also buy special detergent quilt, but it is expensive and no better than Dreft. Put on the quilt and hand shake, then let sit for a few minutes. Spin water out and rinse with clean water, then turn again. Carefully lift the blanket and spread it over the towels on a surface. Cover with a sheet if you have pets or small children, then direct a fan on it until it is dry. If you decide that prefer not to risk, be sure to talk to a professional cleaner QUILT. Do not dry clean it – the use of chemicals that can damage the quilt even more that washing is.
